Abstract
This article focuses on juniper berries, a traditional culinary spice and medicinal herb used worldwide, particularly among Indigenous peoples in the United States. Primarily derived from Juniperus communis and several other edible species, juniper berries are valued for their aromatic flavor in foods, marinades, and gin production. Scientific studies, mostly in vitro and animal-based, suggest potential health benefits including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, cardiometabolic, and anticancer effects, though human clinical evidence remains limited. Cautions include possible toxicity from certain species, contraindications during pregnancy, and potential interactions with medications, highlighting the need for medical consultation before using juniper berry supplements.
