Abstract

The article focuses on a study examining the effects of real-time fMRI neurofeedback (NFB) on auditory hallucinations (AHs) in patients with schizophrenia. Conducted by researchers at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, the randomized, sham-controlled trial involved 23 adults with medication-resistant hallucinations who practiced mindfulness meditation while receiving neurofeedback targeting either the superior temporal gyrus (STG) or the motor cortex. Results indicated that both groups experienced reduced AHs, but the STG-targeted NFB led to greater reductions in secondary auditory cortex activation and improved connectivity between auditory and cognitive control regions.
