Abstract
This article focuses on a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the isolated effects of vitamin B12 supplementation on blood homocysteine (Hcy) levels. Analyzing 21 RCTs with 1,625 adult participants, the study found that vitamin B12 supplementation significantly lowers Hcy concentrations, with greater reductions observed at doses above 500 µg/day and intervention durations of 12 weeks or longer. Among different forms of vitamin B12, hydroxocobalamin showed the most pronounced effect in reducing Hcy levels, followed by methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin. These findings suggest that vitamin B12 supplementation may be a viable strategy to reduce elevated Hcy, a modifiable risk factor linked to cardiovascular and neurological diseases.
