Abstract

This article focuses on a pilot case series investigating the effects of a multistrain probiotic supplement (Symprove™) on gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and constipation management in children with severe recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB-S). Four patients with RDEB-S and chronic constipation requiring macrogol gel treatment were given the probiotic daily for 12 weeks; three completed the study and reported improvements in stool consistency, abdominal symptoms, appetite, and a reduction or cessation of macrogol gel use. The probiotic contained specific bacterial strains including Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Enterococcus faecium, and was well tolerated by those who completed the trial. The authors note the small sample size and lack of placebo control as limitations and recommend larger randomized controlled trials to confirm these preliminary findings.
