Ginkgo biloba extract ameliorates hyperglycaemia-induced enteric glial cell injury via regulation of the TLR2-related pathway.

Abstract

This article investigates the protective effects of Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), derived from Ginkgo biloba dropping pills (GBDP), on enteric glial cells (EGCs) injured by hyperglycaemic stress, a key factor in diabetic gastrointestinal dysfunction (DGD). Using both in vitro CRL-2690 EGC models and in vivo streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice, the study demonstrates that GBE attenuates high glucose–induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis in EGCs. Transcriptomic and protein analyses reveal that GBE’s protective mechanism involves downregulation of the Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) pathway and its downstream signaling molecules Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK), NF-κB, interleukin-1α (IL-1α), and interleukin-10 (IL-10). These findings suggest that targeting the TLR2/BTK/NF-κB/IL-1α/IL-10 signaling axis with GBE may offer a therapeutic approach for managing DGD.
