Abstract

A recent report from researchers at Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine discusses the potential antidepressant effects of licorice total flavonoids (LF) and liquiritin. Licorice has a long history of use in traditional medicine and is found in various antidepressant prescriptions. The study reviews the biological characteristics of licorice and the pharmacological mechanisms of LF and liquiritin in treating major depressive disorder (MDD). The findings suggest that LF and liquiritin may improve depressive behavior, regulate endocrine and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, affect the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) signaling pathway, enhance synaptic plasticity, increase monoamine neurotransmitter levels, protect nerve cells, reduce inflammation, prevent apoptosis, and reduce oxidation. This research provides a theoretical foundation for the development of antidepressant drugs. [Extracted from the article]
