Abstract
This article focuses on recent research from University Hospitals Leuven in Belgium regarding endocrine dysregulation in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN), a complex eating disorder marked by self-induced weight loss and hormonal disturbances. The study highlights that AN in adolescents causes growth failure, delayed puberty, amenorrhea, and reduced bone mineral density due to suppression of multiple hormonal axes. Nutritional rehabilitation is emphasized as the primary treatment to restore hormonal balance and promote recovery, while physiologic transdermal estrogen is identified as the only evidence-based hormonal therapy currently effective for improving bone density and reproductive function. Additional hormonal treatments such as recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), recombinant human insulin-like growth factor-1 (rhIGF-1), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) show potential but require further age-specific clinical trials.
