Abstract

This article focuses on the major operations management (OM) challenges in cloud computing value chains, specifically addressing cloud resource management, pricing strategies in cloud marketplaces, and capacity planning with supply chain management (SCM). It highlights the unique demand characteristics of cloud operations—such as complex workflows, demand redundancy, multidimensional resource requirements, and nonstationarity—and supply characteristics including heterogeneous resources, bundled supply constraints, technology risks, and cost uncertainties. The paper reviews current industry practices and academic research in these areas, emphasizing the potential for OM models to provide insights and improve cloud provider operations. It also identifies numerous future research opportunities, including dynamic resource scheduling under packing constraints, integrated pricing models across market segments, and sustainable capacity planning amid supply chain uncertainties.
