Abstract
The article focuses on the British Computer Society Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence (BCS SGAI) efforts to democratise AI by enabling citizen scientists to engage in scientific research through low-code/no-code (LCNC) platforms and open-source large language models (LLMs). It highlights the potential of accessible AI tools, such as those provided by Hugging Face and cloud services like Google Colab, to lower technical barriers and foster wider participation beyond traditional academic and corporate settings. The article also notes the growing UK AI market and the importance of explainability and reliability in AI for addressing global challenges. Overall, the BCS SGAI envisions that these inclusive AI approaches can empower diverse communities to contribute to scientific innovation.
