Abstract

This article evaluates the quality and educational content of statin therapy information available on popular internet search engines and YouTube. Using standardized tools such as the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) score, University of Michigan Consumer Health Website Evaluation Checklist, and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria, the study found that most websites and videos provide information that is difficult to read and of generally poor quality. Key gaps identified include inadequate explanation of differences between primary and secondary prevention, limited discussion on therapy escalation and monitoring, and insufficient coverage of lifestyle factors alongside side effects. The authors recommend that healthcare professionals recognize these limitations and advocate for the development of accurate, patient-friendly online resources that avoid medical jargon, are regularly updated, and involve patient advisory groups to enhance relevance and comprehension.
