Abstract

This article analyzes the latest trends in popular open source programming languages for 2026 by aggregating data from four major rankings: RedMonk, PYPL (PopularitY of Programming Language Index), IEEE Spectrum, and the TIOBE index. The Top 10 languages identified are Python, Java, C++, JavaScript, C, C#, R, PHP, Rust, and Swift, with Rust making its first appearance in the Top 10. The article highlights Python’s continued dominance, especially due to its role in AI and quantum computing, and notes a decline in PHP’s popularity. It also updates the list of promising young languages, adding Zig while removing Solidity, and references the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, which underscores Rust’s and Zig’s high admiration among developers. The discussion concludes by considering the evolving nature of programming amid advances in AI and quantum technologies. [Extracted from the article]
