Abstract

The Ladybird Browser Initiative is a nonprofit open-source project focused on developing Ladybird, a new web browser engine built from the ground up in C++. Designed for Unix-like environments such as Linux and macOS, Ladybird emphasizes a lean, standards-compliant architecture with minimal external dependencies, following a BSD 2-Clause license. The core subsystem, LibWeb, supports HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and recent updates have improved CSS Grid support and rendering performance. The initiative aims to provide a lightweight, customizable browsing solution, with early alpha releases expected in 2026 and a long-term vision of supporting typical web applications on niche Linux distributions.
