Abstract
This article focuses on the global adoption, applications, challenges, and market trends of facial recognition technology (FRT), with particular reference to India. FRT, an artificial intelligence-based biometric system, is increasingly used in sectors such as security and surveillance, forensic science, banking, attendance monitoring, travel, and defense due to its contactless and efficient identification capabilities. The article highlights the widespread installation of FRT and CCTV systems in Indian states and central projects, while also addressing concerns about accuracy, bias, data security, and wrongful convictions linked to FRT misuse. It concludes by emphasizing the need for robust legal frameworks, data protection, and public awareness to ensure responsible deployment of FRT.
