Abstract

The article focuses on the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) initiatives to improve data protection compliance and environmental transparency in the UK. The ICO is expanding its enforcement of cookie compliance from the top 200 to the top 1,000 UK websites, aiming to ensure users have meaningful control over online tracking and personal data use. It has also published guidance on ‘consent or pay’ models to help organizations implement privacy-friendly business practices. Additionally, the ICO is urging water companies to proactively publish monthly sewage discharge data under the Environmental Information Regulations to enhance public trust and environmental transparency, highlighting a case study from Yorkshire Water as a successful example. The ICO emphasizes accountability and support for businesses to adopt compliant models while protecting individuals’ rights.
