Abstract

This article examines the use and impacts of social networking sites (SNS) among middle-aged and older Deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) adults in the United States, specifically those born between 1946 and 1980 (Baby Boomers and Generation X). Using a mixed-methods approach with surveys (n=32) and interviews (n=3), the study found that SNS platforms are primarily used for social interaction, information seeking, and entertainment, with SNS communication perceived as more accessible than in-person interactions, especially with hearing individuals. Thematic analysis of interviews identified four key themes: increased exposure and representation of the Deaf community, enhanced accessibility and social connection, concerns about privacy, and ideological polarization on SNS platforms. While participants acknowledged challenges such as privacy loss and polarization, overall SNS use was viewed positively for reducing communication barriers and fostering community connection, laying groundwork for future research on diverse D/HH populations.
