Abstract

This article focuses on the world’s first esports tournament, the 1972 Intergalactic Spacewar! Olympics, organized by Stewart Brand, a counterculture figure and writer. The event featured the game Spacewar!, developed in the early 1960s for the DEC PDP-1 minicomputer at MIT, which introduced pioneering gameplay elements such as two-player combat and physics-based mechanics. Held at Stanford’s AI Lab, the tournament attracted about two dozen players and was documented by photographer Annie Leibovitz for Rolling Stone magazine. Bruce Baumgart, a Stanford PhD student, won the competition, which laid the groundwork for the modern esports industry that now generates billions in revenue and involves major games and professional teams worldwide.
