Abstract

This article reviews *Friar Lawrence's Confessional*, a digital adaptation of William Shakespeare's *Romeo and Juliet* produced by Creation Theatre, which uses the Zoom online conferencing platform as both stage and setting. The adaptation presents the narrative from Friar Lawrence's perspective, blending Shakespearean dialogue with modern language and humor, and employs Zoom features to simulate a video call environment where the audience covertly observes the Friar's interactions. To cover scenes outside the Friar's involvement, the production shifts between "showing" and "telling" modes, using digital communications like texts and emails to advance the story while incorporating contemporary cultural references. The adaptation transforms the original tragedy into a comedy, maintaining dramatic tension through modern media inserts and reimagining the pivotal communication failure as the Friar falling asleep, though the use of magic to explain this moment was noted as inconsistent with the production's digital realism.
