Abstract

The article focuses on digital artist Paul Brown, recipient of the ACM SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art 2023, and his perspectives on the evolution of digital art and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in creativity. Brown discusses the challenges faced by digital art in gaining recognition within the traditional commercial art world, which values physical authorship and investment potential. He views AI as a tool that extends human creativity rather than replacing it, emphasizing that true artistic authorship remains with the human creator. Brown also considers the future possibility of AI achieving sentience through advances in quantum computing, which could transform AI's role in art by enabling self-aware creative agency.
