Abstract
This oral history interview focuses on Dr. Robert S. Sheldon, a former President and Fellow of the Military Operations Research Society (MORS), detailing his extensive career in military operations research and analysis. It traces his early life and education, including his work in industry and service as an Air Force officer specializing in engineering and analysis, followed by graduate studies in operations research. Dr. Sheldon's Pentagon assignments involved air-to-air combat modeling and analysis, and after retiring from active duty, he worked in defense-related research and consulting. A significant portion of the interview highlights his leadership roles within MORS, including his presidency and contributions to the Society's oral history program, which has documented the careers of many notable operations researchers. Since 2006, he has conducted over 125 oral history interviews, supported irregular warfare studies for the Marine Corps, and emphasized the importance of understanding military operations firsthand for analysts. The interview also touches on his family's involvement in operations research and his ongoing commitment to MORS activities in retirement.
