Abstract

On 6 September 2024, a shocking revelation rocked the sports world as news broke that German police have launched an investigation into potential match-fixing in lower-league football. According to a report, scores of allegedly rigged games were being sold online, specifically on the dark web, for betting purposes. Investigating officers unearthed message logs detailing the apparent sale of information on up to 17 football matches, spanning competitions from the third division down to regionalised fifth-tier leagues (Associated Press, 2024). The issue of match-fixing is not new in the realm of sports, but what makes this case particularly alarming is criminals' use of the dark web to market these illicit services. Unscrupulous gamblers can allegedly buy access to fixed match scores, a prospect that raises several critical questions. The question is: what is being offered on these hidden sites and can these so-called services be trusted, or are they just elaborate scams preying on the desperate? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
