Abstract
Pump.fun, a crypto project similar to 4chan, has gained popularity as a platform for retail investors to create and trade memecoins. Since its launch in January, over one million memecoins have been created on Pump.fun, generating an estimated $50 million in revenue in just six months. However, critics argue that the platform reinforces the perception of crypto as a casino and distracts from its potential real-world applications. Pump.fun allows users to easily and cheaply launch memecoins, using an automated process that determines the price of the tokens based on user demand. The platform's design is inspired by 4chan, and it has recently attracted attention from celebrities like Iggy Azalea. While some see memecoins as a way to engage in honest trading, others question their long-term value and view them as pointless. The rise of memecoins is also attributed, in part, to the US Securities and Exchange Commission's approach to regulating the crypto market. [Extracted from the article]
