Abstract

This article focuses on the Virtual Volunteers programme, an innovative police volunteering initiative piloted in Wales, United Kingdom. The programme is a collaboration between the University of South Wales (USW) and Tarian, the Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) for southern Welsh police forces, where students use the university intranet to address policing issues such as romance fraud, AI-enabled crime, and money laundering. Currently in an early developmental stage, the programme is undergoing evaluation to assess its progress, limitations, and potential. The commentary also discusses broader insights into the strengths and weaknesses of this form of virtual volunteering.
