Adaptive Support With Working Examples in Serious Games About Programming.

Abstract
This article focuses on the development and empirical evaluation of an adaptive support model based on fuzzy logic within the serious game NanoDoc, designed to teach programming concepts such as sequence, iteration, and condition to novice primary school students. The adaptive system provides worked examples (WEs) as instructional support, activating help based on real-time assessment of student knowledge levels and performance efficiency, aiming to balance assistance and cognitive load. A study with 102 elementary students compared adaptive versus manual support, finding that adaptive support led to significantly higher educational efficiency, more frequent and timely assistance, and greater game progression. The findings suggest that adaptive WEs can enhance learning outcomes in serious games for programming by delivering personalized, well-timed support tailored to individual learner needs.
