Abstract

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has been released after spending over a decade in a London embassy and in British custody to avoid extradition to the U.S. He appeared in a federal court in Saipan, a U.S. territory, where he pleaded guilty to a felony for conspiring to obtain and disclose classified national-defense information. As part of a plea deal, Assange was allowed to return to Australia without serving additional prison time. U.S. authorities had pursued Assange since WikiLeaks published classified U.S. government documents and videos, while supporters argue that his prosecution is a threat to press freedom.
