Abstract
The article focuses on the Haus der Musik in Braunschweig, Germany, a project by the Copenhagen-based architectural firm ADEPT that transforms the former Karstadt department store into a multifunctional cultural venue for concerts, music education, and community engagement. Retaining the original 1978 building’s framework designed by Gottfried and Elisabeth Böhm, the redesign integrates a new concert hall and music school while preserving and reinterpreting the building’s distinctive facade to connect with the city’s historic context. Supported by local entrepreneur Friedrich Georg Knapp and the city of Braunschweig, the project exemplifies adaptive reuse by revitalizing a dormant commercial structure into an inclusive public space that fosters creativity, social interaction, and urban regeneration.
