Abstract
The article focuses on the five largest recorded earthquakes by magnitude, highlighting their locations, impacts, and associated tsunamis. The largest was the 9.5 magnitude quake in Biobío, Chile, in 1960, followed by the 9.2 magnitude Alaska quake in 1964, and the 9.1 magnitude events in the Indian Ocean (2004) and Tōhoku, Japan (2011). The Kamchatka, Russia quake of 1952 ranks fifth at magnitude 9.0, while the recent 8.8 magnitude Kamchatka quake ties for sixth place with other historic events. The article notes that death tolls from earthquakes depend on factors beyond magnitude, such as population density and resulting tsunamis.
