Abstract
This article focuses on health services research (HSR), a multidisciplinary field that examines the structure, delivery, and outcomes of health care, with particular emphasis on its integration into breast imaging. It outlines how breast imaging radiologists can engage in HSR to influence patient advocacy, health policy, and clinical practice by analyzing health care data related to access, cost-effectiveness, and quality of imaging services. The article provides a framework for pursuing a career in HSR within breast imaging, highlighting key steps such as exploring research interests, establishing mentorship, developing research skills, securing funding, and participating in scholarly activities. Examples of HSR approaches in breast imaging include comparative effectiveness research and community-based participatory research, which address clinical strategies and health disparities. Resources and training programs from professional societies and federal agencies are also described to support career development in this field.
