Abstract

The article focuses on a 2023 study analyzing geographic access to syringe services programs (SSPs) across the United States, conducted by RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The study found that while 63% of U.S. adults live within a 30-minute drive of an SSP, only 2.5% live within a 20-minute walk, with access significantly lower in rural areas and varying by overdose mortality rates. The research highlights substantial geographic barriers to SSP access, especially for walking and in rural communities, and recommends expanding SSP implementation and alternative delivery methods such as mobile units and mail-based distribution to improve equitable access to harm reduction services. This peer-reviewed study provides a national geospatial analysis of SSP availability relative to population needs. [Extracted from the article]
