Employers Can Do More to Advance Health Equity.

Abstract

The article focuses on the role employers can play in addressing health inequities revealed by the Covid-19 pandemic, emphasizing that businesses have both ethical and economic incentives to act. Health equity, defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as ensuring all individuals have the opportunity to reach their full health potential regardless of social circumstances, remains elusive for many marginalized groups in the U.S., including Black, Latino, Native American, LGBTQ+, rural, low-income, and disabled populations. Employers can advance health equity by optimizing benefits, addressing social determinants of health, expanding access to primary and mental health care through virtual and community partnerships, and simplifying benefits navigation. The article outlines a strategic approach for businesses to build a business case, collect relevant data, engage stakeholders, measure progress, and commit to sustained efforts, recommending adoption of a "quintuple aim" framework that adds health equity to traditional health care goals.
