Abstract

Researchers have discovered transmissible tumors in hydras, small freshwater animals that are prone to developing cancer. Transmissible cancers are rare but have significant ecological consequences, so understanding how they arise and spread is important. The study found that tumors in hydras can be transmitted from parent to offspring, and reducing the animals' food intake can decrease the transmissibility of tumors. This research could help scientists better predict and control outbreaks of transmissible cancers in wildlife, and studying hydras may also provide insights into cancer biology and metastasis in humans.
