Differential Effects of Two Common Antiparasitics on Microbiota Resilience.

Abstract
This article investigates the effects of two common antiparasitic drugs, albendazole (ALB) and metronidazole (MTZ), on the gut microbiome of parasite-free mice. The study found that MTZ treatment significantly decreased microbial richness and altered community structure by depleting beneficial bacterial families such as Lachnospiraceae, which likely reduced microbiome metabolic function, whereas ALB had minimal immediate impact on microbiota diversity. After a two-week recovery period, the gut microbiome showed resilience with only minor differences in community structure between treated and control groups. These findings highlight differential off-target effects of antiparasitics on healthy gut microbiota and suggest the importance of considering microbiome health during antiparasitic treatment.
