Abstract

This article investigates the integration of religion and spirituality (R/S) in social work practice, focusing on Wisconsin social workers surveyed using the Religious/Spiritually Integrated Practice Assessment Scale (R/SIPAS). Findings indicate that older, White, female, Christian social workers with advanced credentials and those working in clinical, addiction, and hospice settings are more likely to incorporate R/S into client care. Support for R/S integration correlates with religious conservativism and intolerance, raising ethical concerns about potential bias in practice. The study highlights a lack of formal training in R/S competencies, especially among younger practitioners, and recommends enhanced ethics education, mentorship, professional development, and field partnerships to promote culturally sensitive and evidence-based use of R/S in social work.
