Abstract

Scientists at Stanford University have discovered a new type of virus-like entity called "obelisks" that inhabit bacteria in the human mouth and gut. These obelisks have genomes composed of loops of RNA and have been found worldwide. It is not yet known if obelisks affect human health, but they could potentially alter the genetic activity of their bacterial hosts, which could in turn impact human genes. This discovery adds to the ongoing exploration of the viral universe and raises questions about the evolution of viruses. [Extracted from the article]
