Abstract

The article focuses on the critical role of home care therapy in the treatment and management of periodontal disease. Through a case series of four patients, it demonstrates that significant clinical improvements—such as reductions in gingival erythema, edema, probing depths, and plaque—can be achieved solely through patient-performed home care prior to any professional intervention. The authors emphasize that effective home care, including proper toothbrushing and interdental cleaning techniques tailored to individual needs, should be established and reinforced before initiating professional periodontal treatments like scaling and root planing. They also provide practical guidelines and patient communication strategies to enhance adherence and treatment outcomes. Overall, the article advocates for recognizing home care therapy as an indispensable therapeutic step that improves the efficacy and longevity of periodontal treatment.
