Abstract

This article focuses on the first community health needs assessment of Black Alaskans, initiated by the Alaska Black Caucus (ABC) to address gaps in health data and understand the health status, needs, and resources of the Black community in Alaska during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey of 675 Black Alaskans revealed that while many report moderate health, homeownership, and health insurance coverage, significant challenges persist, including chronic diseases, high rates of substance and tobacco use, untreated mental health conditions, and barriers to healthcare access due to cost and provider availability. The assessment emphasizes the importance of community-engaged research led by a Black-led organization and highlights the need for continued advocacy, culturally affirming healthcare strategies, and social work involvement to address health disparities and improve healthcare responsiveness for Black Alaskans.
