Abstract

This article focuses on a study evaluating a psychiatrist-led, integrated model of care addressing metabolic dysfunction in individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, Canada. The retrospective chart review of 378 patients from 2016 to 2023 found that 37.5% lost at least 5% of their baseline body weight over 12 months through combined nonpharmacological and pharmacological interventions, including metformin, topiramate, and semaglutide. The study suggests that psychiatrist-led care effectively reduces psychotropic medication–induced weight gain and may facilitate systematic implementation of metabolic monitoring and interventions in this population.
