Abstract

This article focuses on a community-driven intervention addressing hygiene poverty—the inability to afford essential hygiene products—in Kansas through the Laundry Love initiative, a national program that provides free laundry services to reduce barriers to clean clothing. The Barton County Local Health Equity Action Team (BCLHEAT), formed under the Communities Organizing to Promote Equity (COPE) initiative, implemented monthly Laundry Love events offering free laundry to all patrons without eligibility criteria, fostering dignity and reducing stigma. Between 2022 and 2024, the program served over 1,200 individuals, secured local sponsorships, and inspired replication in nine additional Kansas counties, where community health workers facilitated referrals to social and health services with a 95% completion rate. The initiative not only addressed hygiene poverty but also enhanced social cohesion and trust between residents and service providers, supported by sustainable funding and national organizational infrastructure.
