Effects of Traditional Chinese Exercise on Menopausal Symptoms, Bone Health and Mental Health in Perimenopausal and Postmenopausal Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Abstract

This article systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the effects of Traditional Chinese Exercise (TCE)—including Tai Chi Chuan, Qigong, Baduanjin, and Yijinjing—on menopausal symptoms, bone health, and mental health in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Based on 12 randomized controlled trials involving 1,023 participants, TCE was found to significantly reduce menopausal symptoms and depression and improve spine bone mineral density (BMD), while effects on quality of life and BMD at other skeletal sites were inconclusive. The review highlights methodological limitations and heterogeneity among studies, emphasizing the need for larger, high-quality trials to clarify optimal TCE protocols and long-term benefits. These findings suggest TCE as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for managing menopausal health concerns.
