Abstract

This article focuses on evaluating the impact of the Asthma COPD (ACOPD) Workshop, an educational intervention designed to improve disease knowledge and management among Black American adults with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in an urban church community. The workshop, consisting of three one-hour sessions delivered over six months, significantly increased participants’ understanding of basic disease concepts, risk factors, and management practices, particularly regarding COPD. However, improvements in self-management behaviors were not statistically significant, and knowledge gains diminished by the nine-month follow-up. The study highlights the potential of community-based education, especially through trusted institutions like churches, to address respiratory health disparities in Black American populations.
