Abstract

This article focuses on Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, a globally distributed zoonotic pathogen with significant public and veterinary health implications. It examines the bacterium’s epidemiology, pathogenesis, transmission dynamics, and challenges in diagnosis and control, emphasizing its ability to infect diverse animal hosts, persist in the environment, and transmit primarily via aerosolized particles. The review highlights the importance of a One Health approach—integrating human, animal, and environmental health—in managing Q fever, addressing strategies such as vaccination, surveillance, biosecurity, and emerging concerns like antimicrobial resistance. It underscores the need for multidisciplinary efforts to mitigate the pathogen’s impact on global health.
