Abstract

This article focuses on the increasing prevalence of food allergies among school-aged children in the United States and the critical need for community-based pediatric caregivers—such as camp staff and sports coaches—to receive training in the prevention, recognition, and management of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Epinephrine is identified as the first-line treatment for severe allergic reactions, yet many caregivers lack confidence and hands-on training in its administration. The article highlights a professional practice project where school nurses adapted an allergy and anaphylaxis training module for community caregivers, resulting in improved knowledge and confidence. It emphasizes the role of school nurses in leading community education initiatives to enhance safety and health outcomes for children with food allergies, while also addressing legal considerations such as Good Samaritan Laws.
