Abstract

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) is launching a series examining its own complicity in perpetuating slavery and its legacy in the United States. The journal's editors acknowledge that it has justified and advocated mistreatment based on race, ethnicity, religion, sex or gender, and physical or mental conditions in the past. Independent historians have been commissioned to review the journal's content and produce articles highlighting biases and injustices. The first installment of the series focuses on the journal's involvement in U.S. slavery and medical racism, including the publishing of racist ideas in the name of scientific research. The NEJM aims to learn from its mistakes and prevent new ones. [Extracted from the article]
