Abstract

This article focuses on the development and implementation of a clinical pharmacy–driven pharmacogenomics (PGx) service within Ochsner Health, a large multisite healthcare system in the Gulf South region of the United States. It details key considerations such as patient population targeting, testing strategies, reimbursement challenges, workforce education, and integration of PGx testing and clinical decision support (CDS) tools into the electronic medical record (EMR). The program began with oncology and psychiatry specialties, employing preemptive testing and vendor partnerships for genetic analysis, and expanded system-wide with ongoing interdisciplinary oversight by a PGx subcommittee. The article highlights the essential role of pharmacists trained in PGx to interpret results and support clinicians, as well as the importance of institutional support and continuous education to address clinician hesitancy and optimize patient care outcomes.
