Abstract

This article examines the experiences of moral injury, compassion fatigue, and burnout among clinical psychologists working in National Health Service (NHS) mental health services amid increasing service pressures and socio-political changes in England. It highlights how rising demand, limited resources, and stringent eligibility criteria contribute to clinicians’ moral distress and psychological harm, impacting their wellbeing and retention within the NHS. The article discusses the Job Demands Resources Model to explain how imbalances between job demands and resources exacerbate these challenges and explores organizational and individual strategies to support clinician wellbeing. It emphasizes the importance of open dialogue, supportive leadership, and systemic change to sustain the mental health workforce and improve service delivery.
