Abstract

This article evaluates the Physical Activity and Wellness Series (PAWS), an 8–10 week integrated program designed to improve international students' physical activity participation, self-efficacy (including physical activity, social, and coping self-efficacy), social belonging, and reduce stress and social isolation at a large Canadian university. Using Social Cognitive Theory as a framework, PAWS combined weekly physical activities with mental health education and socialization opportunities exclusively for international students. Quantitative results from 45 participants showed modest increases in physical activity and significant improvements in social self-efficacy and coping self-efficacy, while qualitative focus groups highlighted the program's role in fostering social connections, cultural adjustment, and mental wellness. The study suggests that cohort-based, culturally tailored wellness programs can support international students' adaptation and well-being, though it notes limitations including small sample size and reliance on self-reported data.
