Abstract

The article focuses on the nexus between climate change, migration, and rural development in Southern Africa, particularly in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Eswatini. It highlights how climate-induced extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and cyclones drive rural-to-urban migration by forcing people to flee vulnerable agricultural areas, thereby exacerbating rural poverty and food insecurity. While this migration poses challenges for rural development and food production, it also presents potential opportunities through remittance flows and skills transfer that can support rural livelihoods. The study, based on a systematic review of literature from 2000 to 2024, underscores the need for policies that both mitigate climate impacts and harness migration’s developmental benefits to promote sustainable development in the region.
