Abstract
This article addresses methodological considerations and responses related to a systematic review and meta-analysis examining the association between betel-quid (BQ) addictive use and oral malignant disorders in South, Southeast, and East Asia. The authors clarify their choice of quality assessment tools, explaining the use of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tool over the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) due to study design, and note that a Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) analysis was deferred pending more empirical data. They also report no significant publication bias based on Doi plots and the Luis Furuya-Kanamori (LFK) index. The article emphasizes the under-recognition of BQ use disorder as a harmful addictive condition predominantly affecting low- to middle-income populations, highlighting the need for increased research and attention.
