Abstract

The article focuses on a study investigating blood donor questionnaires and infectious disease screening practices in Latin American countries. An international team of transfusion medicine professionals designed a survey to assess donor eligibility, which was distributed to blood collection establishments in eighteen countries. Responses were received from thirty-seven institutions across eight countries, revealing that most donors are voluntary and that high-risk behavior and low hemoglobin are common reasons for deferral. The findings indicate significant variability in donor selection and screening practices, highlighting the need for further research to improve consistency and reduce disparities in blood donation across the region.
