Abstract

The article focuses on the association between food insecurity and serious cognitive difficulties among adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities (LD). Using data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health in the United States, the study found that food insecurity independently predicted parent-reported serious cognitive difficulties in youth aged 6–17 with ADHD and/or LD, even after adjusting for adverse childhood experiences, psychiatric conditions, and socioeconomic factors. The findings highlight the need to understand how food insecurity and other social determinants of health contribute to cognitive challenges, to inform targeted interventions that support functional and academic outcomes for this population.
