Detection and diversity of human enteroviruses from domestic sewage in Weishan Lake region, eastern China, 2018–2019.

Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating next generation sequencing (NGS) technology for detecting and characterizing enteroviruses (EVs) in sewage from the Weishan Lake region in Jining, Shandong Province, China. Fourteen sewage samples collected between 2018 and 2019 were analyzed using both NGS targeting the P1 capsid region and traditional cell culture methods, revealing 20 EV serotypes by NGS compared to 9 by cell culture, with echovirus 11 (E11), coxsackievirus B5, and CVA9 being most prevalent. Phylogenetic analysis showed that E11 strains belonged to genogroup D5 and were closely related to clinical isolates, indicating active circulation in the local population. The study concludes that integrating NGS into environmental surveillance enhances understanding of EV diversity and circulation patterns, providing valuable data to complement clinical surveillance efforts.
